Peter Woods

Saxophonist, Minister, and Musical Innovator in Ottawa

Peter Woods is an Ottawa-based saxophonist whose sound blends bluesy swing with warmth and lyricism. A longtime presence in Canada’s jazz scene, he has performed at the Ottawa International Jazz Festival and in venues ranging from intimate lounges to festival stages. His playing is conversational and soulful, marked by decades of collaboration with top musicians. Whether in duo, trio, or larger ensembles, Woods brings a deep joy and generosity to the music.

A minister in the United Church of Canada, Woods seamlessly blends his spiritual vocation with his passion for music. His performances are deeply rooted in both sacred and secular traditions, as he collaborates with blues bands, Dixieland groups, choirs, organists, jazz guitarists, and pianists. His love for melody and phrasing is evident in every note, and his shows are celebrated for their ability to inspire and delight.

Woods is equally passionate about the intersection of music and spirituality. He co-founded a monthly “Music and Meditation” series at MacKay United Church in Ottawa, where he and musical director Nick Gummeson create contemplative moments through improvised music and silence. His “Kindness of Jazz” project at MacKay explores how faith communities can engage in social and spiritual improvisation, reflecting on communal values and the wisdom of jazz musicians.

Born and raised in Ottawa, Woods began his musical life as a trombonist before switching to saxophone after high school. He holds degrees in literature and theology, culminating in a master of divinity degree, and has been ordained for almost three decades. His influences are as eclectic as his music, drawing inspiration from jazz legends like Gene Ammons, the poetry of Jan Zwicky, and the activist spirit of Salvadoran pastor Miguel Tomas Castro Garcia.

Pete Woods continues to be a driving force in Ottawa’s cultural and spiritual life, fostering connection and creativity wherever he performs. Whether leading a bar band, improvising in a quiet sanctuary, or sharing the stage with friends old and new, he remains dedicated to the belief that music is a powerful force for unity and joy.
